Louise

Level 5/7 Tutor

I first trained as a primary school teacher and spent the early part of my career leading maths within my school during the implementation of the National Numeracy Strategy. Alongside my teaching role, I wrote for the Folens maths scheme, writing materials that supported junior aged pupils across a range of abilities, including those who found numeracy particularly challenging.

When my own children, who had additional needs, were young, I stepped away from the classroom for a period. As I prepared to return to work, I chose a different route and became a teaching assistant for a dyslexic child. To support him effectively, I completed a short dyslexia course with the BDA—an experience that opened the door to a new professional passion. I discovered how much I valued understanding the learning profiles of neurodivergent students and how rewarding it was to help them grow in confidence.

This led me to study for my Level 5 and subsequently my Level 7 dyslexia qualification, enabling me to work in schools as a specialist teacher. Over time, however, I found myself drawn back to my lifelong enthusiasm for mathematics. During the Covid period, while I was also working with my students online, I began training as a dyscalculia specialist and completed the Level 5 qualification in this field.

After the pandemic, like many people, I reassessed my priorities. I decided to take the step into self-employment, allowing me to bring together my skills in both literacy and numeracy support. I now teach students of all ages, carry out assessments for dyslexia and maths difficulties, and deliver webinars and INSET training. I have also presented several webinars for the Dyscalculia Network.

Outside of work, I volunteer as the chair of governors at a local primary school. I enjoy reading, walking my dogs, and spending time with my family—activities that keep me grounded and inspired.
