The Benefits of a Full Diagnostic Assessment for Dyslexia

by Jane Opie, founder of Dyslexia Herts

Assessing for Dyslexia

My career working with individuals with specific learning differences and now as a specialist assessor for over 15 years has shown me just how valuable and transformative a full diagnostic assessment can be.

I come from a neurodivergent family and know personally how an assessment can lead to self knowledge and understanding, highlight strengths and build confidence. There are huge benefits that it brings whether you are a child,  young person or adult in education, the workplace or if you just want to understand more about yourself.

Screeners for Dyslexia and specific learning differences (SpLDs)

The  first steps are often a screener; these are often quick tests, at times completed online that give an indication of whether you may be dyslexic. It can be helpful but does not tell you more than that.

At Dyslexia Herts we have a free online screening checklist which  asks about you or your child. It helps to explore the likelihood of dyslexia or other specific learning differences so we can give you the best advice about next steps.  It’s a good place to start.

We then may suggest you book a call to discuss and find out more about an assessment and what it involves.

A full Diagnostic Assessment

A full diagnostic assessment is not a quick test and a printout. It’s a detailed, thoughtful process carried out by a specialist who brings years of training and experience with them. You receive:

3 hours of one‑to‑one assessment

With careful observation and note‑taking throughout.

A full developmental and educational history

Gathered beforehand to ensure the assessment is grounded in real context.

A personalised and detailed report

Written specifically for you or your child. This includes not just a dyslexia diagnosis but also signposting to other professionals such as optometrists, GPs or occupational therapists where appropriate.

Recommendations that look ahead

Not just at the present: support for primary and secondary school, transitions to university, workplace needs and long‑term strategies. In every assessment we are looking further and make personal recommendations for you or for how you can support your child at home, as well as recommending technology that can help.

Ongoing support

For us, an assessment is much more than a one-off event. You will have a one-to-one feedback session. The assessor will talk through the report and answer your questions. You can book a call and get in touch if you need advice at any stage

Certainty

Our team are all specialist assessors with the Assessment Practising Certificate (APC). This means that they renew their certificate every three years and engage in continuous professional development. They have up to date knolwdge and use current tests approved by the SpLD Assessment Standards Committee (SASC). A report from an APC assessor will last for as long as you or your child need it and will be widely accepted by schools, colleges, universities or the workplace.
